Stockbridge Audubon is now Three Rivers Birding

In December 2023, the board of directors of Stockbridge Audubon Society decided to change the name of our organization to Three Rivers Birding. In the FAQ below, we aim to address some questions you may have about the board’s decision to embrace a new name reflective of our evolving mission and community focus.

Q: What is Three Rivers Birding?

A: Formed in 1899 as the Allen County Audubon Society and recently known as Stockbridge Audubon Society, Three Rivers Birding is the new name of Northeast Indiana’s chapter of the National Audubon Society. Our mission is to further the appreciation, advocacy, and conservation of birds and nature in Northeast Indiana.

Q: Why did the name change?

A: Like dozens of other chapters around the country, we realized that the character and conduct of John James Audubon had flaws that preclude him from being an appropriate figurehead for an organization in the 21st Century. You can read more about this topic from the National Audubon Society here: https://www.audubon.org/magazine/spring-2021/what-do-we-do-about-john-james-audubon

The other part of our name was after local ornithologist Charles Stockbridge. We acknowledge Stockbridge’s contributions to bird advocacy and conservation (read more about him here: https://www.stockbridgeaudubon.org/charles-stockbridge), while at the same time understanding that having an organization named after two long-dead men does not provide context for who we are and what we do as we look to the future.

Q: Is Three Rivers Birding still a part of the National Audubon Society?
A: Yes. We changed only our name, and we are still affiliated with the national organization.

Q: Why was Three Rivers Birding chosen?

A: We chose a simple name that we believe accurately describes our organization. While we are based in Fort Wayne, the Three River City, our reach extends to a broader region, just like the rivers that flow throughout this part of the state. “Birding” is more than just bird watching. We care deeply about these animals and the ecosystems that they are a part of.

Q: How do I become involved with Three Rivers Birding?

A: You can start by attending one of our events, which are open to anyone. If you are new, we recommend starting at one of our monthly hikes at Franke Park, which are held on the first Saturday of the month at 10:00am and meet in the BMX track parking lot. You can also sign up for our email list or contact us here (https://www.stockbridgeaudubon.org/contact-us)

Q: Do I have to know about birds to participate?
A: No! We welcome people of all ages, skill levels, and abilities. We all started somewhere, and all we ask is that you bring an appreciation for nature.
